BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
A Baton Rouge tax preparer pled guilty Tuesday for her role in a scheme to receive fraudulent tax refunds.
Brenda Matthews, 48, admitted that she filed 56 tax returns that claimed the First Time Homebuyers Credit, even though she knew the taxpayers had not bought homes.
The tax returns generated refunds of more than $300,000.
Matthews pled guilty to one count of making false claims to the U.S. government and two counts of identity theft.
When sentenced, she faces up to 15 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
