FULTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Family and friends of a man shot and killed at World Changers Church International were coping with a tragic loss on Wednesday.

"There was an unfortunate tragedy at the ministry today," said Ken Terry, a minister at World Changers Church International.

Terry spoke on the behalf of the family of the victim, Gregory McDowell, with a heavy heart.

"He struck Gregory McDowell who is a tremendous leader in our church, a tremendous server, a dynamic guy, faithful for a number of years, a long time member," Terry said.

Terry said McDowell was shot during a prayer service at the church, and now family and friends have come together for support.

"Of course we all are distraught by it and we're trying to show our comfort, our love, our support to the family," Terry said.

Marlene Guice, who lives next door the McDowell family, cried when she learned that her 39-year-old neighbor had been shot to death at the church.

"Please pray for them, everybody please pray for him and his children and his wife. That's the most important thing," Guice said.

McDowell leaves behind a wife and two sons.

"For this to happen, of course, is just devastating," Terry said.
