Hartford mayor stops suspected criminal

Posted: Updated:

The mayor of Hartford, Pedro Segarra, stopped a suspected would-be thief Wednesday.

Segarra was walking on Wethersfield Avenue earlier in the day when he noticed a man trying to take two cases of beer out of the back of a delivery truck.

"I'm the mayor and on my watch, I'm not going to allow anybody to get away from taking private property that does not belong to them," said Segarra, who was little bit embarrassed about the interview.

The mayor said his instincts kicked in and he began following the suspect and yelled at him to drop the beer.

"The first time that I stopped him, he ignored," Segarra said. "Second time, I said, 'Put it down,' he ignored it. The third time, I think he felt that I was serious because he started to walk away."

Police have since arrested the man for stealing.
