LSU goes through opening men's basketball practice

From LSU Sports

BATON ROUGE – The Johnny Jones era at LSU is officially underway.

Jones, along with assistant coaches Robert Kirby, Charlie Leonard and David Patrick, put the 11 Tigers through a spirit two hour, 15 minute practice on the arena floor of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

The team worked on all aspects of the game after beginning with some conditioning drills including defensive aspects, rebounding and offense. The team worked a lot 4-on-4 and closed the practice with some 5-on-5 scrimmage work.

Jones is entering his first year as the LSU head coach after 11 seasons as head coach at North Texas. The former LSU player and assistant coach knows the PMAC well from his previous sting in Baton Rouge and he also knows that his team got a lot done in the opening practice that will eventually lead to the opening game of the 2012-13 season on Nov. 9 against UC Santa Barbara, a team that went to post-season play a year ago.

"It was really impressive," said Jones. "I thought they came out with a lot of energy and played hard. They were extremely focused. I'm very pleased with their first practice. I thought the guys picked up on a lot of things early. We were able to go through some of our offensive schemes. I thought they rebounded and ran our break extremely well. I thought we did a job of executing for the short time we have been together. I am really pleased with the effort."

Jones will be introduced to the crowd during Saturday night's football game against South Carolina in Tiger Stadium.

Season tickets are on sale for the 2012-13 season at LSUtix.net Follow LSU Basketball on Facebook at www.facebook.com/LSUBasketball and on Twitter @LSUbasketball.
