BAYOU L'OURSE, LA (WAFB) -
Investigators
announced they have made an arrest in a rash of truck break-ins at a boat launch
site after catching the suspect on hidden cameras.
The
Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office said Ulysess Payne, 32, of LaPlace faces
simple burglary charges.
Deputies
said they began investigating several vehicle burglaries in September that had
taken place at the Bayou Cheramie Boat Launch on LA 398 in Bayou L'Ourse.
According
to reports, victims would return from a day boating on the water to find their trucks
had been broken into and items had been stolen.
APSO said
the suspect took merchandise such as audio equipment, tools and other
miscellaneous items.
Detectives
said they set up surveillance cameras near the boat launch. The cameras caught
a glimpse of the suspect and his truck during one of the burglaries.
The
deputies said after searching the area they located a possible person of
interest.
Officials
said they increased the hidden camera surveillance and spotted the suspect at
the boat launch in the same truck seen on the video.
Investigators
said a search of the truck turned up several stolen items.
Payne was
immediately arrested. He denied any involvement in the thefts.
He was
booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center on two counts of simple
burglary.
His bond
was set at $20,000.
Sheriff
Mike Waguespack urges people to write down all serial numbers of guns and
electronic equipment, whether it is kept in your vehicle or your home.
He said
that information can be invaluable in locating stolen property.
