A dolphin found floating near the Old Mississippi River Bridge is now on shore and in the hands of Wildlife and Fisheries biologists.
The EBR Sheriff's Marine Patrol helped State Wildlife and Fisheries agents get it out of the water Wednesday.
The dead dolphin was spotted earlier this week, but agents had to wait until it was safe to retrieve it.
Biologists are now working to determine how and why the six-and-a-half foot bottle nosed dolphin swam this far up river and how it died. A necropsy will be performed at the Audubon Institute.
Agents say this is the farthest north on the Mississippi River they've seen a dolphin, as far back as they can remember.
