Pedestrian killed on I-10 east of Vinton

A pedestrian was struck and killed by an 18-wheeler on Interstate 10 east of Vinton  around 8 a.m. Wednesday after authorities said he stepped into oncoming traffic while fleeing from police after a traffic stop.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was traveling from Houston to Montgomery, Ala., according to a news release from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office.

Authorities said the man was killed after the vehicle he was in was stopped for a traffic violation by the Calcasieu Parish Combined Anti-Drug Task Force.

"After the driver began to act suspiciously, detectives allowed their trained and certified drug detection K-9 "Mako" to conduct a free air sniff around the vehicle. After Mako provided a positive response to the odor of a controlled substance, a subsequent search revealed three cellophane wrapped bundles of marijuana, approximately four pounds, hidden in the driver's luggage inside the vehicle's trunk. After being handcuffed and informed he was under arrest for possession of marijuana, the driver of the vehicle fled on foot into oncoming traffic, being struck by a commercial motor vehicle," the release states.

Paramedics responded to the scene, authorities said, however, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The name of the driver is being withheld pending the next of kin, according to authorities.
