PONCHATOULA, LA (WAFB) - A sanity hearing is scheduled for the man suspected of killing a former broadcaster and police juror.

Eric Maurer, 33, is charged with second-degree murder and aggravated burglary in the stabbing death of Rube Rogers, 65, of Ponchatoula on Aug. 13, 2010.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office believes Maurer robbed and brutally killed Rogers in his home.

Friends and family of the victim said Rogers raised the younger Maurer since his teenage years and was like a stepfather to him.

Detectives said the suspect took off with his real father, Ricky Maurer, 53, after the murder.

The pair was arrested in Humphreys County, TN the next night.

The elder was charged with accessory after the fact for first-degree murder.

According to reports, Eric Maurer confessed to killing Rogers and robbing him for drug money.

The two men waived extradition and returned to Louisiana about a week later.

Judge Ray Chutz is presiding over the case.

Rogers worked for ActionNews17 and was a member of the Tangipahoa Parish Police Jury.
