PONCHATOULA, LA (WAFB) -
A sanity
hearing is scheduled for the man suspected of killing a former broadcaster and
police juror.
Eric
Maurer, 33, is charged with second-degree murder and aggravated burglary in the
stabbing death of Rube Rogers, 65, of Ponchatoula on Aug. 13, 2010.
The
Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office believes Maurer robbed and brutally killed
Rogers in his home.
Friends and
family of the victim said Rogers raised the younger Maurer since his teenage
years and was like a stepfather to him.
Detectives
said the suspect took off with his real father, Ricky Maurer, 53, after the
murder.
The pair
was arrested in Humphreys County, TN the next night.
The elder
was charged with accessory after the fact for first-degree murder.
According
to reports, Eric Maurer confessed to killing Rogers and robbing him for drug
money.
The two men
waived extradition and returned to Louisiana about a week later.
Judge Ray
Chutz is presiding over the case.
Rogers worked for ActionNews17 and was a member of the Tangipahoa Parish Police Jury.
