Amite mayoral candidates meet for debate

AMITE, LA (WAFB) -

Candidates looking to replace outgoing Amite Mayor R.E. Goldsby squared off in a debate Tuesday evening.

Voters in Amite will hit the polls this November to elect a new mayor for the first time in twenty years.

Getting things done was a common pledge for those seeking to become Amite's first new mayor since 1992.

The town with a population of just over 4,100 has over 2,700 registered voters and many in attendance, like former councilwoman Glyniss Gordon, are excited about what lies ahead.

"Well it's history - that's why turnout is so good," said Gordon.

Voters listened to promises of change and dedication, looking for sincerity and a commitment to the office.

"I want to hear them each tell me how long, Monday through Friday, they plan to be in the mayor's office in City Hall," said Shirley Gabriel.

"That's why these things are essential to inform public because we're at a juncture that we need to make wise decisions about who leads us," said Weldon Russell.

Mayor Goldsby is not seeking re-election.
