PEMBROKE, NC (WMBF) - Seven of the 10 dogs involved in the mauling death of a Pembroke woman have been put down.
Bryon Lashley, the Director for the Robeson County Animal Shelter, confirms the dogs were put down around lunchtime on Friday.
Lashley confirms the 10 dogs involved in the fight included seven pit bulls, two terriers and a pug.
Two small dogs involved in the attack are still at the shelter, and right now, Lashley isn't sure what will happen to them, but says they won't be put down.
He's still waiting to hear from the dogs' owner to find out what she plans to do with those two dogs.
According to the information released from the Robeson County Sheriff's Office, the deputies received the call about the dogs around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct 2. They responded to the home on Sharon Lane to find several dogs attacking a female in
They came to discover that the rescued dogs were attacking a smaller dog when the woman tried to intervene with a rake. The larger dogs then attacked her, "leaving her body mangled." The pug died last week.
Deputies were able to tear the dogs away from her body to find that she had died during the attack, and the canines were taken by animal control.
The sheriff's office says the victim was 54-year-old Mary Jo Hunt. Hunt did live in the home and the homeowner rescued several of the dogs, which were described as "mixed breeds."
This case is under investigation by the Major Crimes Division of the Robeson County Sheriff's Office and was assisted by the Robeson County, Lumberton, Pembroke and Maxton Animal Control.
