The mayor of Independence surrendered and was booked by the Tangipahoa Sheriff's Office on Thursday dating back to an incident with a town police officer on August 6, according to Independence Police Chief Frank Edwards.

Michael Ragusa was charged with three counts, including a felony charge of public intimidation. Battery of an officer and interfering with an investigation are the additional misdemeanor charges.

The incident occurred in the parking lot of Brunt Construction, owned by Ragusa and stemmed from a traffic stop involving Ragusa's son.

The report states that Ragusa came out of the building during the stop and slammed the door of the police unit on the body a female officer.

Ragusa was asked about Edwards claim of his arrest on Thursday and replied, "The Police Chief's full of bull."

The report also states that Ragusa called Chief Edwards and demanded that the female officer involved in the incident be fired.
