BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Police arrested a man they believe shot and killed his pregnant girlfriend Tuesday.

The Baton Rouge Police Department said Adam Sterling, 33, was taken into custody after Shylah Hicks, 21, was shot multiple times in the chest.

She and her unborn child died at the hospital.

Sterling spoke to cameras as he was led to a police car to take him to jail.

"I love my baby momma," he said. "I ain't never did nothing to hurt her or nothing."

The shooting happened in the 1700 block of Madison Avenue in Baton Rouge around noon.

Family friends on the scene said Hicks was five months pregnant.

According to police, the shooting is believed to have stemmed from a domestic issue with a boyfriend. There was a domestic call to that very address Monday.

"I've been her 40 years sir and basically, I feel it's safe until this happens, then it's unsafe," said Linda Rogers, who lives in the neighborhood. "One angry person can be in any neighborhood. Now, why this neighborhood is so angry? I'll never know."

Sterling was booked into the East Baton Rouge Prison and charged with second-degree murder, first degree feticide, illegal use of a weapon and convicted felon in possession of a weapon.

He faces life in prison if convicted.
