The U.S. Census Bureau released two pieces of data Tuesday: poverty numbers and the median income for 2010.
The Huffington Post is reporting the national poverty rate in 2010 was 15.1% which is up from 2000 and the highest it's been since 1993.
24/7 Wall St. took the released census data from all 50 states and identified the ten states that have the lowest median income.
Louisiana came in as the 5th poorest state in the country, according to the data analysis from 24/7 Wall St. The state has one of the lowest median incomes in the country with $41,896. LA also has the 4th highest poverty rate in the U.S. and the 17th lowest unemployment rate.
In an effort to stimulate the state economy, Governor Bobby Jindal has proposed the construction of a new gas-to-liquids facility, which is expected to create more than 5,000 jobs: "We're here to make an announcement that could result in Louisiana's largest economic development project in our state's entire history."
Mississippi also made the list as the number one poorest state, according to 24/7 Wall St. They have the highest poverty rate in the country at 21.3 percent, with a median income at $36,850. They have the 7th highest unemployment rate at 10.4 percent.
The state was also hit hard by Katrina, including the Gulfport Harbor, which the Federal Government is allotting $500 million to help rebuild. Proponents of the project expect thousands of jobs will be created in the process.
Here is the complete list of poorest states in America, according to 24/7 Wall St:
