EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
An Evansville man is in jail on Monday night accused of attacking his girlfriend's dog with an ax.
Police say after 6:00 p.m. Sunday night they were called to a home in the 1700 block of East Illinois Street. They say they found the dog injured, and the suspect locked behind a bedroom door.
"There was four or five cops that kept circling that house that was just down the road," said a neighbor.
Dogs are common in neighborhoods along East Illinois Street, so Sunday night, when Nelson Ledoux heard a dog squealing next door he knew something was wrong.
Ledoux said, "I heard a lot of noise yesterday and I did hear a dog squeal and it did cause me concern. It wasn't something I'm normally used to hearing. It was scary."
Police say that squealing was from a gray pit-bull inside the home. They say the dog had been attacked by 33-year old Michael Aaron Hughes with an ax that police say was recovered at the scene.
"That would be the last thought in my mind. It's pretty sickening," the neighbor said.
When officers tried to arrest him, they say Hughes locked himself in a bedroom and then struggled with officers.
Hughes is being held on preliminary charges of animal cruelty and resisting law enforcement.
The K-9 victim was taken to an emergency vet to be treated.
"People need to be more concerned whenever they have an animal that they need to take the necessary steps to care for the animal. A lot of people don't do that," Ledoux said.
The pitbull is alive after being treated and released for those severe wounds to his head and legs. But, neighbors are simply shocked this happened so close to home.
