JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A preliminary coroner's investigation reveals the Jackson State Officer gunned down early Saturday morning may have been dead up to 10 hours before his body was found.

The body of 27-year-old Joseph Welch was found in a grassy area near West Capitol and Kolb Streets some time before 8 a.m. Saturday morning.

According to Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart, Welch had been shot five times.

JPD officers responded to a shots fired call at 1:45 a.m. Saturday.

Welch's body had not been found until the sun came up and it was discovered by neighbors.

That's when police were called again.

If anyone has information about Welch's shooting death, you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 601-355-T-I-P-S.

No statement has been released by Jackson State University.
