Man arrested after trying to sell stolen handgun at pawn shop

A man is behind bars after police say he tried to sell a stolen handgun at a pawn shop.

Police say Richard Carl Welch, 35, of Loranger, LA went into a pawn shop in Tangipahoa Parish and tried to sell the gun. When the owner of the pawn shop found out the gun was stolen, he contacted the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office. 

Welch returned to the store later that day and was taken into police custody while officers were conducting an investigation.

The investigation showed Welch had outstanding warrants for traffic offenses. He was taken into custody and charged accordingly.

Welch did not have the stolen handgun with him when went back to the story, so he was not charged with possession of stolen property.

The arresting deputy later found the gun.
