BAYOU CORNE, LA (WAFB) -
Drilling of the observation well at the giant sinkhole in Assumption Parish is expected to enter the abandoned salt cavern Thursday afternoon.
The Office of Conservation says Texas Brine, the company which owns the salt dome, reported the progress Wednesday.
Officials hope the well can help give clues as to what is causing that sinkhole in the Bayou Corne Area.
A map released by the Assumption Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness puts in perspective how close the sinkhole is to nearby communities.
Some homes are just 2,000 feet away.
A town meeting is scheduled for concerned residents at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph the Worker Church in Pierre Part.
