Authorities said a grandfather drowned Sunday evening on Lake Robinson while trying to save his granddaughter after she fell overboard.
Investigators said the 4-year-old girl, who was not wearing a life vest, fell out of her family's boat and into the water.
Officials said the grandfather jumped in to try to save her, and while he was trying to put a life jacket on her, he went underwater and did not resurface.
Investigators said the girl's mother then jumped into the water, and when she couldn't get the girl back into the boat, she was forced to hold the child and push the boat at least 100 feet to the dock.
There were two other children in the boat, who were not hurt.
The grandfather was identified as Ronald White, 61. Greer police and the Department of Natural Resources are investigating.
