Southern University has dismissed head football coach Stump Mitchell.

University leaders say Mitchell will be reassigned to a yet unnamed administrative position on campus.

Southern has appointed Dawson Odums as interim head coach.  Odums was the team's defensive coordinator.

The development comes after what many Southern University fans are calling an "embarrassing" showing on the football field Thursday night.

Mississippi Valley State beat Southern University Thursday for the first time since 2005, winning by a score of 6-0.

A meeting took place Friday morning between Southern officials and Mitchell in which officials asked Mitchell to step down, WAFB's Jacques Doucet reported.

Mitchell is 6-18 overall and 0-2 this season.   This was his third season with his team and the last year of his contract.
