Cleanup process begins in Ascension Parish

SORRENTO, LA (WAFB) -

Parts of Ascension Parish are still dealing with high water as a result of Hurricane Isaac. One of those is the Sorrento area.

However, neighbors along Stringer Bridge Road in the St. Amant community are beginning the cleanup process.

Ami Clouatre Johnson's home was taking on water a few days ago. She spent Labor Day cleaning up.

"Blessed, really blessed; with family and friends, I feel so blessed," Johnson said. "Little shining moments like this help you realize you have friends that have your back and help lift you up."

Parish officials credit the parish's pump system for saving much of the parish from catastrophic flooding. Many residents still have sandbags around their homes and some have ripped up carpet out in their front yards, indicative of flooding issues.

"I can't say enough thanks to the Ascension emergency preparedness people. They not only helped me, but the parish. And, there are still people in Sorrento dealing with flooding. Also, thanks to the fire department. They worked so tirelessly," Johnson explained.

"I feel much better," said Parish President Tommy Martinez.

Parish officials were worried about the possibility of a "worst case scenario" unfolding, which would have led to major flooding. Because of that, parish leaders called for a voluntary evacuation for parts of Ascension Parish, specifically the areas of Acy, Sorrento and parts of St. Amant. Now that the water is receding, parish leaders said the cleanup can begin.

"That's one of the really great things about living here, we do have that sense of community," Johnson added as she looked around her home.
