BATON ROUGE, LA (AP) -
Residents of 18 Louisiana parishes with heavy damage from Hurricane Isaac have been approved by FEMA to apply for grants for temporary housing and home repairs, and to cover uninsured property losses from the storm.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency says the individual assistance is available to homeowners, renters and business owners in Ascension, Assumption, Iberville,
Jefferson, Lafourche, Livingston, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St.
Charles, St. Helena, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Mary, St. Tammany,
Tangipahoa, Terrebonne and Washington parishes.
Beyond the grants for housing repair and living assistance, residents and business owners can apply for low-interest federal disaster loans through the U.S. Small Business Administration.
Under federal law, the state picks up 25 percent of the costs for the FEMA aid, while the federal government pays 75 percent.

The State of Louisiana will
request that Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (DSNAP)
benefits be approved for Iberville
and St. Mary parishes. A request for DSNAP benefits was
made for Assumption, St Helena, St James, Terrebonne and Washington parishes Thursday.
Currently, residents of these
parishes are not eligible for benefits.
Residents of the following 9
parishes are eligible for DSNAP right now: Ascension, Jefferson, Lafourche,
Livingston, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. John the Baptist and St.
Tammany. DSNAP sites in St. Charles and Tangipahoa parishes will open on
Sunday.
Louisiana
has also requested IA assistance for five additional parishes, which is still
pending FEMA approval. These are: East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Pointe
Coupee, West Baton Rouge and West Feliciana parishes
