Man mixing chemicals killed in explosion

HARVEY, LA (AP) - Authorities say a 37-year-old man was killed by an explosion as he mixed chemicals at a biodiesel plant in Harvey.

State Fire Marshal Butch Browning tells The Times-Picayune the man and another employee were mixing sulfuric acid and methanol, which presumably led to the explosion Friday at Gold Leaf Energy. The man's identity hasn't been released, but authorities say he is from Gonzalez.

The other employee suffered minor injuries.

Browning says two nearby vehicles caught fire and were totaled and a nearby metal warehouse also was damaged.

The refinery opened in 2011. The company makes biodiesel for commercial clients and for film production, according to its website.
