LAPLACE, LA (WAFB) -
The lines were long and steady as hundreds gathered at New Wine Christian Fellowship on Sunday to pay tribute to St. John's Parish Deputy Jeremy Triche.
"We just pray for the family because that's most important."
Members of the community were joined by those who serve and protect from all over the state, filtering in to the viewing services in order to remember one of two officers killed in the line of duty.
"You don't realize until you get in there and see how everything is connected in community, how important it is to come and show support for somebody like Jeremy who goes out to protect us every day," said Glen Fernandez, a teacher at St. Joan of Arc Catholic school.
"When they hurt, we hurt because they are there to protect us so we need to be covering them now and showing our support," added LaPlace resident Tanya Smith.
Support and a new found appreciation of just how short life can be.
"You go about your day thinking things like this don't happen especially in a community like this but things like this make you realize how precious life is and that you have to take it one day a time," said Fernandez.
The family of Jeremy Triche will hold another visitation Monday morning between 9 a.m. and 10:30 to be followed by a mass and burial at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in LaPlace.
Deputy Brandon Nielson's family will hold a visitation beginning Tuesday afternoon at 5 p.m. at Lakelawn Funeral Home in Metairie.
