GRAND ISLE, LA (AP) - Grand Isle police say robbers shot and robbed a man, then set his house on fire - but he escaped by jumping from a window 14 feet above ground.

Police Chief Euris Dubois tells WWL-TV ( that robbers got into the house about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, demanding money. He says the man was shot in the stomach during a struggle. The robbers got $900, shot and killed the man's dog after it bit one of them, and then torched the building.

Dubois says the man locked himself in a back room and jumped out a window of the raised house

Investigators don't know whether the robbers chose the victim or acted at random.

Authorities say the man is in stable condition at University Hospital in New Orleans.
