MUSCOGEE COUNTY, GA (WTVM) -
More than a week after Georgia's primary election, the final numbers of Thursday's re-count show that Sheriff John Darr is the Democratic candidate for the race for Muscogee County Sheriff in the general election this fall.
On Monday, Darr's opponent Pam Brown demanded a re-count of last week's primary election.
Thursday's results showed that the numbers did vary slightly which each candidate gaining 19 votes, but the margin stayed the same with Darr beating Brown by 71 votes.
"Every vote counts. I think this is a great election and example of that. And, I commend Ms. Brown on running a good race. The results show it was a very close race and they did a fantastic job," said Darr. Darr says he is relieved and happy, but this is the outcome he expected.
Brown says she believes the numbers are correct and has learned a lot about the political process.
"I learned there is a lot more to politics than I thought. I think I did a good job. My committee did a good job," said Brown.
After Thursday's results, Republican candidate Mark LaJoye says he is ready to pump up his campaigning for the general election.
"Well, it is good to see that we can now concentrate our campaign and focus on one particular person. We're kind of excited to get ready and get started. I think it is pretty clear that the voters in Columbus and Muscogee County spoke loud and they are ready for a change," said LaJoye.
Darr says such a tight race should encourage everyone to head to the polls in November.
"Seventy-one votes is very close. You know get out there and do your civic duty and vote. I urge everyone to exercise that right," said Darr.
Brown says this is not the last time you will see her on the ballot. She plans to run in the next election for Muscogee County Sheriff.
