Southern Football: Lions Handle Elements In First Full Pad Workout Of Camp

HAMMOND, LA (WAFB) - The Southeastern Louisiana University football team donned full gear for the first time in camp as the Lions worked out for over two hours Sunday evening in Strawberry Stadium.

Light showers in the Hammond area at the beginning of practice gave the Lions their real first opportunity to test out the traction of the new playing surface that was installed during the offseason. The rains cleared out about 30 minutes into Sunday's workout which allowed Southeastern to work on all phases of its game, highlighted by live action in the red zone.

"The weather cooperated and everything went smooth," Southeastern head coach Ron Roberts said. "It was a nice, spirited practice and guys got better fundamentally, that was the most important thing that we're looking for right now.

"(Today) was a good opportunity for us. It was raining at the beginning of practice which gave us the opportunity to work with a wet ball and those are great opportunities for us because that may happen during the season. I thought our guys responded well to the weather and came out and had a good practice and kept their focus."

In the red zone period, receivers Blane Arnold and Tony McCrea each caught a pair of touchdowns, but the Southeastern defense made several stops forcing the offense to convert on field goals. The defense also was the recipient of a couple of turnovers, including a fumble recovery by freshman Azuka Akozar.

"We put the ball on the ground too many times in the red zone, had mistakes on the offensive side and shot ourselves in the foot," Roberts said. "We've got to set the pace of what we're looking for every time and hopefully grow at it every time we come out."

Southeastern will return to practice on Monday when the Lions will work out in full gear at 4:50 p.m. The Lions open their season on Sept. 1 at SEC newcomer Missouri and will host Missouri Valley Football Conference member South Dakota State in the home opener on Sept. 8.
