BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Denham Springs Fire Department responded to a small fire at Southside Elementary School Sunday evening.
The fire broke out in the back of the campus around 7:00 p.m.
DSFD spokesman Dennis Greer says a lightning strike is believed to have started the fire, but says they are still investigating.
Greer credits a fast response for getting the flames extinguished before they spread, potentially causing more damage.
"I don't know who exactly made the call but we got here couple of them up front but they got out the building. We were able to make a quick stop on it and thank goodness it wasn't no more than what it was," Greer said.
Officials said the school will be ready to go for students' first day on Thursday.
