LSU's d-line stays big, while LBs look small but fast

If there is one thing that will never change when it comes to the LSU Tigers, it is the size of their defensive line.

On the first day of fall practice, the defensive line was the most active part of the defense. Two Tigers were wearing new numbers along the front, Anthony "Freak" Johnson and Bennie Logan.

Logan takes over number 18, which was handed down to him by Brandon Taylor, and Johnson is wearing Michael Brockers' old number of 90.

Barkevious Mingo was in the green jersey, which limited what he could do in practice.

Sam Montgomery, Jermaurio Rasco, Ego Ferguson and the rest of the big guys up front all looked bigger and faster, which is scary when you think how good they were a year ago.

At first glance, the LSU linebackers look small, but you can see they have a lot of speed.

Defensive coordinator John Chavis was working with the linebackers on getting their hips around a little quicker.

On a quick note from that department, freshman Deion Jones was working with the veteran LBs.

In the secondary, freshman cornerback Jalen Mills joined the veterans. Tyrann Mathieu has one corner spot wrapped up and expect Tharold Simon to be the guy on the other side.

The battle for the second safety spot is officially on. It should be interesting to see if White Castle standout Ronald Martin or Craig Loston will join Eric Reid at safety.
