LSU players report back to campus tomorrow, with practice beginning Thursday.
Les Miles welcomes back 15 starters from last year and a team that will be ready to put behind them the loss to Alabama in the National Championship and look to make their way to Miami for a chance win it all this year.
LSU also welcomes a new quarterback and hope for a struggling offense this year. Tiger fans hope Zack Mettenberger will bring a passing game that LSU has not had in recent years. The Tigers will once again have a strong running game with Spencer Ware, Michael Ford, Alfred Blue and Kenny Hilliard all returning this year.
It will not be easy for LSU to make it to Miami with games against Washington, at Auburn, at Florida, South Carolina, at Texas A&M, Alabama and at Arkansas.
If any team can make it through this year's schedule undefeated it is LSU. The Tigers are loaded with talent with six starters back on offense and defense.
Five players were named to the CBSSports.com Preseason All-American team: cornerback Tyrann Mathieu, safety Eric Reid and defensive end Sam Montgomery. Mathieu was also named a first-team All-America punt returner. Sophomore punter Brad Wing was recognized on the first-team special teams as well. Defensive end Barkevious Mingo was named to the second team.
LSU will have split squad practices for the first three days of camp with the varsity practicing in the morning followed by the freshmen/newcomers along with selected upperclassmen in the afternoon session. LSU will have its first full squad workout on Sunday, August 5, with its first scrimmage scheduled for Saturday, August 11.
LSU opens the season in Tiger Stadium Saturday, September 1, against North Texas.
