BRPD starts training academy

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A new Baton Rouge Police academy is underway.

Monday was the first day for 34 new cadets hoping to get the chance to protect and serve.  Officials selected the class from more than 250 applicants.

For the next five months, cadets will go through both physical and mental tests.

One cadet, a law school graduate, said her decision to trade the books for a badge was a no-brainer.
"I was so interested in the criminal field, and I kind of researched more about and just learning more about the crime in Baton Rouge right now, we need more good people on the streets right now and this is just what I always wanted to do," said new cadet Karole Muller.

Top BRPD brass hopes this will help fill some of the vacancies in the force.
