Brees ready for the unknown

Drew Brees had his first formal news conference since signing a contract making him the highest paid player in the NFL.

Brees made it clear right off the bat he will miss Sean Payton, calling him a friend and mentor. He admitted he is not sure what the feeling will be when he walks in and there is no Payton running the halls, but he emphasized that the coaches in place are very good, and he is especially comfortable with offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael and interim head coach Joe Vitt.

While this is uncharted territory for the team, Brees is, "excited for the unknown, because we don't know what to expect. There's no greater opportunity in front of us."

Brees said the faith, belief, and pieces have been in place since 2006 and have the team ready for any situation, including the one the team finds itself in this year. Ironically that is the same season Brees was not sure the Saints would win a game.

Looking back on last year's record breaking season, Brees admitted that it will be hard to match the statistics, "just to be honest with you. But stats don't always equal success."

Brees is excited about starting over, just like every year, it is a chance to get better. The goal is to build a winning team and he says the Saints are ready for a great season.

The quarterback is looking forward to seeing his teammates, many he hasn't seen in nearly six months, "it's like homecoming."

Brees says it is all about "doing your job."

The Saints open preseason August 5th against the Arizona Cardinals.
