CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

The Charleston Police Department is on the lookout for a man who stole more than $1,000 worth of fuel from a gas station in downtown.

On Sunday around 9:17 p.m., the suspect parked an 18-wheel truck at the gas station on  1968 Meeting St.

The suspect then entered into the store and presented the teller with a TCH credit card, which is required before pumping is authorized.

Authorities say the gas station does not have the ability to pre-swipe credit card purchases for the diesel truck bay. The teller authorized the pump to be used. Only after the pumping was completed could the teller swipe and charge the card.

A police report states that the suspect put diesel fuel into the truck, then the truck pulled out from the bay. At that time, a second 18-wheel truck entered the bay and pumped gas.

The total amount pumped from both trucks was 273.785 gallons valued at $1022.86.

When the teller swiped the card, it was discovered that the card was not functional. Police say the suspect never returned for the card. Authorities say it was apparent from video surveillance that the incident was a coordinated effort.

The gas station manager told investigators that a similar incident took place in May. Police are continuing the investigation.

The suspect is described as a black male wearing a blue shirt, black hat, jeans and a glove on his left hand.

If you have any information you are asked to call police or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
