CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - January 9th, 2012 was an extra-special day at Presbyterian Hospital. That's where Sam and Nicki Moore welcomed their 9-ounce baby into the world. Kenna Claire Moore is the smallest baby ever born at the hospital, and the 4th smallest baby in the world.
Doctors and nurses worked tirelessly to treat a whole host of problems that were born right along with such a tiny baby. Mother Nicki suffered from pre-eclampsia and Kenna was delivered via Cesarean section at 23 weeks.
"There were days when it was scary," Nicki said. "There were days when I didn't know if we were going to get another day."
After 183 days in Presbyterian Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care unit, Kenna is home.
"It's such a relief. It's so nice having her here. It's so nice not running to the hospital and spending all day at the hospital," said Nicki. Her and her husband Sam made the 30 minute trip from their South Charlotte home to the hospital every day.
At 6 months and 10 days old, Kenna weighs in at 6 pounds, 10 ounces. She's gained 10 ounces since she's been home. That's more than she weighed at birth.
While Kenna is connected to a constant flow of oxygen and monitored by a heart monitor around-the-clock, her prognosis is great according to her mother. "So far so good. She's shown no signs of any neurological impairment, she's shown no signs of having cerebral palsy or anything of that nature."
Nicki says medical surprises could be in her future, but right now, Kenna's behaving just as she should at her adjusted age of 2 1/2 months. "It's going to take years before we truly know the ramifications of her being born so small, but I'm confident that we can handle anything that's thrown at us," said Nicki.
Nicki has kept a constant on-line journal of Kenna's progress, almost from the day she was born. A FaceBook page called, "Keeping up with Kenna" has more than 1,600 likes.
