LINCOLNTON, NC (WBTV) -
A Lincolnton firefighter is hospitalized with serious injuries after he injured his spinal cord after diving into Lake Norman over the weekend.
According to officials, Adam Dancoff was enjoying a day on the lake with his family Saturday around 3 p.m.
When Dancoff dove off the side of a boat, he injured his neck and lost feeling in his legs and had difficulty breathing, according to the fire department.
Dancoff suffered a spinal cord injury, and lost the use of both of his legs, which doctors do not believe he will regain, Chief Lee with the Lincolnton Fire Department told WBTV.
He was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center where doctors learned he had a fractured vertebra. He is still in the hospital - recovering from surgery.
Dancoff has been recovering in the Intensive Care Unit since his injury.
According to his family, via Facebook, doctors were hopeful they could move him out of ICU on Tuesday and place him on the Neuro floor.
His family has started a Facebook page called Prayers & Encouragement For Adam, where friends can keep up with Adam's progress and help support the injured firefighter.
