BIRMINGHAM, AL - Today was the start of SWAC Media Days and Stump Mitchell talked about the Jags with optimism for the upcoming season.
Stump talked about his team being more experienced this season, saying, "This will easily be the best team, in every phase, that we've had since we've been here."
Mitchell named the offensive line as one example of the experience this year's team will have, "This will be the first time we will not have to start one or two freshman on the offensive line."
One thing not going well at Southern is the effort to add new turf to Mumford Stadium. Mitchell said efforts to raise money for the new turf have fallen "woefully short".
A huge motivational tool being used to drum up excitement from the fans by the Jags this year is that the team will be eligible for a SWAC Championship, after being ineligible last year.
Southern is predicted to finish fourth in the five-team West, with Grambling picked to win the division.
Only three Jaguars were named to the All-SWAC preseason team. Tight end Mike Berry, tackle Chris Browne and defensive back Virgil Williams were all named to the second team.
