We've heard far too many stories recently of women being killed or injured as a result of domestic violence. In fact, nearly 20 percent of all people killed in East Baton Rouge Parish the first six months of this year were victims of domestic violence. And, Baton Rouge is not alone.

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence says one in every four women will experience some type of domestic violence in her lifetime. One in four, that is hard to believe. Most cases are never reported to police. And, when they are, prosecution rarely happens.

Domestic violence cases make up 95 percent of all dropped cases in East Baton Rouge. Experts say there are many reasons. The victim may feel coerced, threatened, or dependant on the person charged. They may believe they are all alone.

But, there is help available. In each and every case filed in East Baton Rouge, the victim is interviewed. And, every case is reviewed by the district attorney. There's also a hotline available. If you need help, call 1-800-541-9706 or if you know someone in a tough situation, please pass this number along. You may be saving a life.
