Lake Havasu City airport honors instructor pilot

Posted: Updated:

The airport in Lake Havasu City is being renamed in honor of a man who opened a seaplane flight school in the western Arizona city in 1985.

A dedication of the Joseph J. La Placa Memorial Airport is planned Saturday in the main terminal. The all-day event will feature remarks from Mayor Mark Nexsen, and aircraft and aviation displays, along with activities for kids and pilots.

La Placa died in 2012 at the age of 83. He had amassed more than 30,000 hours of flight time during his career. He was inducted into the Arizona Aviation Hall of Fame in 2005 and twice named as flight instructor of the year in Arizona.

He moved to the state in 1976.
