FAYETTEVILLE, NC (WBTV) -
Military officials have
released the name of the man killed by one of his fellow soldiers at Fort
Bragg.
Authorities say 42-year-old Lt. Col. Roy
Tisdale died immediately after being shot Thursday, and the shooter then turned
the gun on himself but survived.
A second soldier was also shot but is
expected to live.
The name of the shooter has not been
released but sources say he was a specialist under Tisdale's command.
He was facing a dishonorable discharge
for allegedly stealing a tool box worth two-thousand dollars.
Sources say Tisdale and the gunman served
together in Afghanistan.
An investigation is underway after the shooting that killed the senior officer.
According to officials at Fort Bragg, in Fayetteville, a shooting took place on base on Thursday afternoon around 3:30 p.m.
According to Fort Bragg officials, a soldier with the 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade shot another member of the unit and then turned the weapon on himself, during a unit safety brief.
According to the Army Times, the solider who was fatally shot was a senior officer.
The shooter was injured and is in custody, according to Fort Bragg officials. A third soldier was reportedly injured by a ricocheting bullet.
"This is a tragedy for our community. We don't yet know the reasons for the shooting, but are working with the unit and the affected Families to help them through this difficult period," said Col. Kevin Arata, XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg Public Affairs Officer. "Our prayers are with those who have been affected by this terrible incident."
Fort Bragg law enforcement and emergency responders secured the scene within minutes at the corner of Letterman and Armistead Streets.
According to the Army base's Facebook page, drivers and pedestrians were urged to avoid the historic district of Fort Bragg until further notice.
Special Agents from the Army Criminal Investigation Command are on the scene and have begun an investigation.
