City council votes in favor of Fortune 500 company site

GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - Emerson can move forward with plans in Ascension Parish. This comes after the Gonzales City Council voted 3 to 1 in favor of a zoning change that would help the Fortune 500 company looking to expand in Gonzales.

A proposal to rezone about 18 acres of land north of Orice Roth Road in Gonzales was on the council's agenda Monday evening.

The land is located one block off of Hwy. 30 near I-10.

The proposal changes the zoning from residential to commercial to make way for the regional headquarters for Emerson Process Management.

The company, based in St. Louis, wants to expand their existing facility that's been in Ascension for 40 years, and add around 90 jobs. Neighbors around the proposed site say they support Emerson, but say they should build somewhere else.

"I just became a pawpaw, and I'm going to have kids growing up in this neighborhood. This is a good neighborhood and we want it to stay that way," said Tyrone Smith, a resident who opposes the Emerson Plan.

There are also those who like the idea.

"I'll be frank with you. I think they have very little to be concerned about," says Mike Eades with Ascension Economic Development Corp.
