CARROLL COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
A 6-year-old Carroll County girl is recovering in the hospital after overdosing on prescription medication in her playhouse Friday. The outcome may have been worse if it wasn't for the quick response of the girl's neighborhood friend who called for help.
The Carroll County Sheriff's Office said the girl and her friends found the pills in a nearby vacant trailer and brought them to a plastic playhouse. The pills consisted of sleeping, heart , cholesterol and anti-anxiety medications.
"I told Kelsey not to take them because they're adult medicine but she didn't listen to me," said Michael Fincher, 6. Fincher said he was playing with the girl when she opened the capsules and ingested the contents. "I could read the labels," said Fincher who recalled the labels read "not for children."
"Her voice sounded weird and she fell asleep," said Fincher who ran and told the girl's grandmother.
The girl was flown to Children's Hospital in Atlanta where the Carroll County Sheriff's Office said she is recovering and could be released this week.
The Division of Family and Children Services was called to determine if the home is safe for the girl to return once she recovers medically.
The Carroll County Sheriff's Office said it continues to investigate.
