He was ordered to stay away from his estranged wife, but that didn't stop Frank Atkins.  Police say he allegedly shot his estranged wife, who was four months pregnant.

Frank Atkins is still on the run and he's also a man who's all too familiar with the law.

Atkins, 26, has previously been convicted of resisting an officer, simple battery, possession of drug paraphernalia, burglary and felony drug possession.

Police say just after noon Tuesday, Atkins shot his estranged wife, 23-year-old Kayla Atkins, in the arm and the back at a home on Bay St.  She was able to escape and make it several blocks away to Choctaw & Scenic Highway.   She was taken to the hospital.

"I'm just praying to the Lord that she pulls through this," said Rosalyn Crump, Kayla's mother.  "And I hope some kind of way they keep this man where he's supposed to be."

Frank Atkins wasn't supposed to be anywhere near her daughter.

In fact, District Attorney Hillar Moore says Atkins was arrested Sunday for domestic battery against Kayla.   In the probable cause, the responding officer wrote Frank Atkins "grabbed her around the throat with his right hand and began to choke her."

A judge set his bond at $7,500 and a provision to that bond.

"He was not to have any contact with the victim and obviously pieces of paper can't stop someone from coming over, can't stop a bullet in this case," said Moore.

That piece of paper is a petition for protection from abuse Kayla Atkins filed Monday.   It was the second one she had filed.   On Tuesday, she was shot.

On May 2nd, 2012, Kayla filed a temporary restraining order saying "he threatened me and pulled out a gun on me...I'm afraid of him because I believe he would kill me."  The report goes on to say that in the past, Frank "jumped on me, choked me, slapped me and punched me while I'm pregnant, blacked my eye, busted my lip and bit me in the face. Told me if I ever leave him, he would kill me"

Moore says his office has already convicted Atkins of three misdemeanors and two felonies - those being resisting an officer, simple battery, burglary and drug possession.

Other charges include attempted first degree murder, second degree murder, armed robbery, drug charges and more - some as recent as this month and some dating as far back as 2005.

Atkins is still at large - if you can help police find him, call Crime Stoppers 344-STOP.
