SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

DPS Troopers, Smith County Sheriff's Office, and a DPS air unit successfully searched the east side of Smith County for a man who fled from a DPS trooper during a traffic stop Tuesday evening.

Just before 6:15, DPS confirmed to KLTV the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Sharman Glenn James of Cedar Hill, was apprehended near the Cork and Bottle liquor store off of Interstate 20.

Around 5:15 Tuesday, Trooper Baker pulled over James on Interstate 20. Officials say Trooper Baker felt something was strange with the stop, so he requested back up.

"The driver had some suspicious activity going on inside the vehicle. I asked to search the vehicle and he refused consent and based on that I asked for k9 unit to be dispatched to my location," Trooper Baker said.

While waiting for back up to arrive, officials say the man fled the vehicle on foot.

Trooper Baker saw a pistol in the man's vehicle, but he did not flee with the pistol.

Bob Armstong was driving on I 20 when he witnessed Trooper Baker pulling over James. When Trooper Baker took off in pursuit, Armstrong said he left his clipboard. Armstrong was meeting  another trooper to give the clipboard, when he spotted James running near the Cork and Bottle Liquor store.

"They told me to meet the deputy over here and while I was sitting here I see the guy they're looking for walk right in front of me. When the deputy showed up I told him the guy ran into that gas station, and then they all showed up to try and catch him," Armstrong said.

DPS Troopers, the Smith County Sheriff's Office, and a DPS air unit searched an area off of CR 3119 in the far eastern part of Smith County.

James was apprehended in the wooded area between mile marker 579 and 580.

DPS officials said they expect James to be charged with evading arrest when he is booked into jail.
