LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Moments after a Heavenly Angels daycare van full of children loses control and slams into a tree, Kosair Children's Hospital was ready for the influx of patients.
"The injuries are from bumps and bruises, to some broken bones, to some concussion type injuries as well," said Cis Gruebbel, R.N, MSN, Kosair Children's Hospital Chief Nursing Officer.
14 children were rushed by EMS to be treated, from 5 months to 9-years-old, every child survived the crash and was immediately checked out. By nightfall two children were discharged.
"We have three children that are going to our intensive care unit just for closer watching, any time a child is in our ICU, they are considered critical, but all three of these children are stable," said Gruebbel. "The others will be admitted to a General Med Surge floor."
Brandon Brown had three cousins involved in the crash, two were seriously hurt. "Everybody is trying to stay calm," said Brown. "Everybody is kind of emotional right now, not too many tears right now, we are kind of on that line, we don't want to expect the worst."
Family members still have a lot of questions about what went wrong, and why the driver lost control.
Detra Murral says her cousin, Lavonia Cochran-Lewars, is the owner of Heavenly Angels daycare. She was not involved in the accident, but Murral immediately came to check on her.
"I use to work there, so I'm concerned about my cousin because it is my family," said Murral. "I know that she loved those kids, she does anything for her kids, so that's why I'm here for her."
Lewars was going back and forth between Kosair Children's Hospital and University Hospital, but she did not wish to speak with us about what happened.
As for Brown, while he waits for his cousins to recover, he's just glad an angel was watching over them. "The kids are ok and I guess that's the most important thing," said Brown.
Gruebbel says anytime a child is involved in an accident, the next 24 to 28 hours are critical, because their condition can change quickly.
