MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) – A 19-year-old man admitted to causing the accident that killed one man and sent another to the hospital in critical condition. Police say the crash was a result of a drug deal gone badly.
James Brandon Pearraw, 19, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident on Brunswick and Memphis-Arlington Road Monday night.
John Stacy, the driver of the car that was hit, was taken to The MED in critical condition.
The man who caused the accident drove away after ramming the victims' car several times.
Detectives later located Benjamin Edwards, 19, who admitted to causing the crash.
"We're being told this was the result of a drug deal gone bad," said Chip Washington, Shelby County Sheriff's Office. "You have three 19 year olds, two of which lives will never be the same again, one of course, which is unfortunately not here anymore for something that was needless and senseless at the same time."
Washington said Edwards was planning to buy marijuana for $300 from Pearraw, a high school acquaintance. He said Stacy took the money and drove away without completing the trade.
After ramming the victims' car, Washington said Edwards went to work.
"He was sitting in his car," said Washington. "The vehicle was found at a McDonald's in Arlington where he had apparently worked, which is where he went after this incident."
Edwards said he did intentionally hit the victims' car hoping to stop them from driving away.
He is charged with reckless homicide and aggravated assault.
