BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
An outpouring of family, friends, and strangers gathered Thursday at New Hope Baptist Church on Greenwell Springs. It was all for the families who lost so many loved ones in last week's tragedy in Slaughter.
"I can't imagine the hurt this family is going through. It's touching. I've cried for them, I've hurt for them. So that's why I'm here for them. It's the least I can do," said Lindsey Hall, who came to show her support.
"I just want to be a part of this to show them that we feel for them. Our heart aches just like their heart aches," said Janice Adolph, who also came to show her support.
"We're all one family in Baton Rouge, and we all care about each other's hurt. When they're hurting, I'm hurting," said Councilwoman Denise Marcelle.
Brenda Gaines, her daughter Denise, four grandchildren, and a family friend Angela Mosley, were all in the car that was hit head on last Wednesday night in Slaughter. Five people died instantly. 15-year-old Willie Gaines was pulled off of life support over the weekend. His 13-year-old brother Roderick Johnson remains on life support, barely holding on.
"I've lost five people at one time. My wife, my daughter, three grand children, and I have one on life support. Really, it's something I never wish anyone has to go through," said Reverend John Gaines.
Reverend Gaines says this outpouring has been overwhelming, and hopes everyone can take away one message from this benefit: Don't drink and drive. Police say the man responsible for these deaths, 30-year-old Brett Gerald, was out celebrating his birthday the night of the accident.
A viewing was held at Richardson Funeral Home in Clinton Thursday evening for Angela Mosley. A funeral for the Gaines family will be held Friday, June 8, at 11 a.m. at the Living Faith Christian Center on Winbourne Avenue.
Thursday's benefit raised approximately $32,594 to help with funeral expenses.
