CALCASIEU PARISH, LA (KPLC) -

An early morning car chase on the I-10 ends in Vinton where Calcasieu Sheriff's deputies discover the driver was an 11-year-old boy.

The boy drove from Lafayette and was spotted driving recklessly between Sulphur and Vinton at 2 a.m. Wednesday morning. When a Sheriff's deputy asked him to pull over, the driver didn't comply. Instead he drove faster exceeding 120 mph.

Finally taking the exit in Vinton, crashing into the guard rail causing the driver to lose control of his parents 1998 Honda Accord. Fortunately the boy only had minor injuries.

The boy told deputies he was traveling to Houston to visit family. When his parents arrived to pick him up from the scene, they were surprised to discover their son was close to two hours away from home and they had no idea he was gone, according to CPSO Chief Deputy Stitch Guillory.

"The crazy part is, here's a kid that's 11-years-old, that's driving down the interstate, very easily could have killed himself, killed somebody else driving in the reckless manner that he was. We were very fortunate that this occurred at 2 in the morning and not 2 in the afternoon," Guillory said.

The boy was charged with reckless operation of a vehicle and flight from an officer.
