LSU catcher Morgan Russell gave the Lady Tigers an early 2-0 lead over the nation's top-ranked team, but it wasn't enough to hold off the Cal Lady Bears, who sent LSU into the losers' bracket with a 5-3 victory Thursday afternoon at the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
Russell's bases-loaded single staked All-American pitcher Rachele Fico to the 2-0 advantage in the second inning, but Cal erupted for three runs in its final at-bat against reliever Brittany Mack to break a 2-2 tie and secure the win for Jolene Henderson. Henderson out dueled Fico by scattering eight LSU hits and allowing just one run the rest of the way.
LSU now faces South Florida in an elimination game on Saturday, after the Lady Bulls lost to Oklahoma.
