Louisiana Ranks Last in Quality of Life

(Undated-AP) -- A report issued by a private think tank based in Washington, D.C., says Louisiana has the worst quality of life of any state. Minnesota took top honors in that category and Massachusetts grabbed the number one spot "overall."

The National Policy Research Council just published The Gold Guide, a compendium of various research reports that attempts to rank cities and states in different categories such as education and the environment. The report's publishers says the need to interpret the multitude of often-confusing ranking reports made available to policy makers and business leaders led to the 16-month research initiative.

According to the report, Louisiana ranks 49th in the "overall" category, 49th in "health and welfare," 50th in "public safety," 47th in education and 46th in "economic dynamism." The state's only bright spots are in the government category (27th), infrastructure (29th) and entrepreneurship and small business (23rd).

A spokeswoman for the state Department of Economic Development says the department has yet to see the report. But, Sandy Deslatte cautions that a thorough examination of the methodology behind NPRC's research will need to be done before relying heavily on its data.

Deslatte says reports that try to assign a rank to a state or city sometimes are misleading at first glance because often good news is contained within subcategories that aren't always the focal point of media attention.
