CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

A woman who's facing charges in the death of a Covington toddler appeared before a judge at the Hamilton County Justice center Monday morning.

Marquita Burch, 26, is charged with abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence after police found the body of the child she was babysitting her nephew, one-year-old William Cunningham.

Burch originally told Covington police Friday night that the child was missing from a park, but later changed her story and directed officials to a Cincinnati apartment on Winton Road where Cunningham's body was discovered in a hallway closet.

According to Derek Gustafson, Burch's attorney, the boy suffered and accidental injury after falling down a set of stairs. Burch gave the boy ibuprofen before putting him to bed, only to find him dead the following morning.

"Even if that were the truth there were still some things that happened following William's demise that were very inappropriate, very inhumane," said Vanessa Sparks, Cunningham's great aunt.

Funeral arrangements are being made at the Gwen Mooney Funeral Home in Spring Grove Village.

Cunningham's family is also in the process of setting up a memorial fund.

Burch's attorney said she gave Cincinnati Detectives a statement and is cooperating. Northern Kentucky Detectives say Burch misled them in an effort to misdirect the investigation. Burch has previous felony assault and domestic violence convictions in Kentucky.

Burch's bond is set at $500,000.
